Branchlets angular; petioles and mature leaves rusty-cobwebby, tomentose or rusty whitish and becoming glabrate; tendrils intermittent.
Leaves cordate, 3–5-lobed or not lobed, 2–3.5 cm long, 2–4.5 cm broad, chartaceous to thin coriaceous, broad to ovate, acute or acuminate with broad and round sinuses, mucronate to dentate, basal sinus deep and narrow, 0.3–1.5 cm wide, 0.6- 1.8 cm deep, glabrous above, densely and cobwebby-tomentose beneath; petioles 1–3 cm long.
Thyrse 5–8 cm long. Berry small, 2–3-seeded, 5–8 mm across.
Vitis thunbergii var. thunbergii. A variety, with leaves about 5.5 cm long and 4.5 cm wide, is represented by the nomenclatural type of Vitis thunbergii Sieb. & Zucc.
